Roydon Primary School
Norfolk County Council Children’s Services
Project Overview
Commissioned by Norfolk County Council Children’s Services as part of their Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND) and Alternative Provision Transformation Programme, the project created a 16-place early intervention and additional support base for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils. Identified as a priority in Norfolk’s SEND Strategy, this specialist provision forms a key part of the county’s local offer for children with special educational needs and their families.
From RIBA Stages 0 to 6, Norse Group delivered a full suite of multi-disciplinary design services including architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering, structural and civil engineering, landscape design, quantity surveying, project management, construction design management, and planning consultancy. The extension was carefully planned to make the most of previously underused internal and external spaces. Its sympathetic design complements the original Victorian building, following the line of the existing hipped gable for a seamless expansion. Internally, surplus accommodation was remodelled to create two classroom bases with breakout pods, pupil WCs, a hygiene room, a sensory space, a flexible office and meeting room, and additional storage.
The project introduced biodiversity net gain measures around the school field while retaining the existing sports facilities. Practical enhancements were also made, including staff and visitor parking, taxi drop-off access, landscaped areas, and dedicated hard play spaces for pupils to enjoy.
Impact
This thoughtfully designed space allows children with additional needs to learn, grow, and thrive within their local community. By adapting and expanding existing mainstream facilities, the project brings specialist support directly to pupils, reducing the need for long journeys to specialist settings. Pupils can learn close to home, maintain friendships with neighbours, and feel genuinely connected to everyday school life. At its heart, the project champions inclusive education, creating welcoming facilities that prioritise accessibility, opportunity and belonging.
“This exciting project identified surplus and under-utilised mainstream classrooms which, with the addition of the new extension, has enabled specialist facilities to be provided to support the inclusion of pupils with special educational needs.”
