Why confined spaces training matters for employers

Confined spaces present some of the most serious workplace hazards, with risks that are often invisible until it’s too late. From utility chambers and service ducts to tanks, silos and sewers, these environments can contain dangers such as oxygen deficiency, toxic gases, flooding and restricted access, making proper training essential.

Under the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, employers must identify risks, carry out suitable assessments and ensure employees are competent to work safely. Providing recognised training not only helps organisations meet their legal responsibilities but also gives employees the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to work safely in medium risk confined spaces.

Effective training combines theory with hands-on experience. Delegates learn how to prepare for entry, use gas monitoring and escape breathing equipment, follow safe systems of work, communicate effectively as part of a team and respond appropriately in an emergency. Practical exercises help ensure these skills can be applied in real working environments.

Fast Lane Training Services, part of Norse Group, delivers the City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Entrant and Entry Controller for Confined Spaces (Medium Risk) from its dedicated training facility in Ketteringham, just outside of Norwich.

The two-day course takes place in realistic simulated confined spaces, allowing delegates to build confidence in a controlled environment. Through practical exercises, participants learn to use specialist equipment, understand their responsibilities and work safely as part of a team. Successful candidates receive a nationally recognised qualification, valid for three years.
