Project overview
Meeting growing demand
NPS Leeds, part of Norse Group, delivered the design and technical consultancy for the £4.65 million expansion of Moor Allerton Hall Primary School, creating additional teaching facilities to support a growing school community and address increasing demand for primary places across Roundhay and Moortown.
Completed in March 2020, the project delivered a new standalone teaching block providing six classrooms, practical learning spaces, a hall and supporting facilities, creating an additional form of entry for the school. Alterations to the existing building, including a kitchen extension, ensured the expanded school could operate efficiently while meeting the needs of pupils, staff and the wider community.
Protecting heritage and nature
The site presented several complex challenges, including sloping topography, protected mature trees, the adjacent listed Moor Allerton Hall, and the need to maintain safe vehicle access and drop-off arrangements for both the primary and neighbouring secondary school. These constraints shaped the design, resulting in a development that sits sensitively within its surroundings while delivering a high-quality learning environment.
Protecting the site’s mature trees was a key design priority. Their root protection areas informed the positioning and layout of the new building, preserving an important landscape feature that contributes to the setting of the listed hall. Existing stained glass was also carefully retained and reused, reducing waste while maintaining a connection to the school’s heritage.
