Brett Puckering is coming towards the end of a four-year, Level 3 Electrical Installation course that he says will be beneficial to both him and his employer, Norse.

For Brett, taking up an apprenticeship is about being part of a team.

He joined Norse as a Craft Operative, involved in numerous different services for the company and assisting his colleagues in the completion of their duties for each working day.

Over the course of his apprenticeship he has been able to put the skills he has learned into everyday practice, enabling him to do the work he does today for the Group.

In the future, his aim is to become fully qualified and to contribute even more than he does already; he would like to work on different installations and systems to further his knowledge in the electrical field.

Here he discusses just what his apprenticeship has meant to him:

What have been the biggest benefits of your apprenticeship?

The learning. I am a keen, hands-on worker who enjoys learning and understanding the technical and practical aspects of the jobs to hand.

I have benefitted from working with my colleagues – they have helped teach and guide me throughout my time at Norse.

What have been the highlights of the apprenticeship for you?

The best parts of the programme would be the practical aspects. Learning the different methods and the ins and outs of a particular installation, as well as the problem-solving aspects. I am constantly learning and putting my knowledge into practice.

What have the challenges been and have you been well supported?

I have to complete a portfolio with set requirements per unit. These include different installation types, cables, methods and many other aspects for everyday electrical installation. This has been hard work, but I have been well supported.

My colleagues have made my apprenticeship a priority – as such they have helped me to learn and to grow as an individual.

What advice would you give to someone else considering an apprenticeship?

My advice would be to go for it. With the right people around you, giving you good guidance, the only way is up.

I am enjoying my time and am thankful for the opportunity to do this.

Be committed and give it your all because the knowledge gained and career you forge will be worth it.

Sum up your apprenticeship experience in three words:

What a ride…
