Karen Claydon discusses the role of women almost every day in her working life and is fascinated by how much things have changed over the decades.
She began her career as carer with NorseCare, based in Norfolk, and went on to progress to the role of Wellbeing and Dementia Lead, as this was an area of particular interest to her.
“I look after the mental and physical wellbeing of all those in our settings,” she explains. “I try to make sure they are stimulated and lead fulfilling lives.
“I check in on everyone regularly for a chat to see if they have any concerns or if there is anything I can do to make their time with us more enjoyable. I also try to make them laugh – I act the fool sometimes!”
In her day-to-day work, she often considers how far women have come over the decades.
“I work with older people and can see how important the concept of Breaking the Bias is. The women tenants who we support within the housing with care schemes, wouldn’t have dreamed of putting themselves forward or standing up for themselves.
“On an almost daily basis I challenge what our tenants believe, and grew up knowing, about the roles of women in society. They have lived with gender stereotypes all their lives.
“We reminisce and compare now to then and discuss how everyone should be valued and treated equally.
“I try to have resources that challenge stereotypes – and am happy to challenge any bias or discrimination by anyone in my place of work.”
She continues: “For me, International Women’s Day is about celebrating all women and the incredible impact they have on the world today.
“It is about standing tall and proud – and saying: ‘This is what I can, and will, do.’”
Q: Is there a woman you particularly admire?
A: My grandmother. She is outspoken and not afraid to say what she believes. She is also ready to listen to other points of view and apologises if she’s in the wrong
Q: What advice would you give to a young woman just starting out on her career?
A: I’d say go for it! Make the job your own and do what you believe is right and makes you happy. You are a person in your own right, and no-one should ever make you feel less than fabulous!
