Works to the Art Gallery and Central Library included replacement of slate pitched roof coverings, replacement of the patent glazed roofs, and decoration internally around the roof lights. The redundant M&E plant was also removed.

60-70% of the roof slates were fixed and reused reducing waste from the site, and pointing repairs were carried out to external parapet walls and chimneys. Rainwater goods were repaired and restored, and refurbishments of the Central Library turrets and timber repairs to the roof structures were carried out.

The Central Library had to remain open during the repair work of the roof. During the roofing project on the Art Gallery, the original sectional barrel vault glazed roof was uncovered.

A number of sustainable elements were incorporated to improve the building’s efficiency, reduce costs and help protect the artwork and historic documents. The single glazed roofs were replaced with a modern, sympathetic, thermally efficient double glazed powder coated system. Thermal insulation was also incorporated between the rafters in accordance with the current Historic England’s guidance.
