Successful new waste arrangements paying dividends in Daventry

Recycling rates in Daventry have risen dramatically following the launch of a new partnership between Norse and Daventry District Council.

Under the 123+ service launched last June, residents receive a weekly food waste collection, a fortnightly mixed recycling collection in a blue-lidded wheelie bin and a general waste black bin collection every three weeks.

There is also an optional fortnightly garden waste service and more than 20,000 homes – around 56% of the District – have already signed up for it.

New recycling figures show a 63% increase in food waste collection and a 14% rise in recycling levels of cans, glass, paper and other dry recyclables.

This is coupled with a 27% reduction in the amount of rubbish being put in waste bins – from 7,130 tonnes down to 5,150 tonnes between June and October.

Daventry District Council’s Environment Portfolio Holder, councillor Jo Gilford added:

Introducing this new collection service was an enormous undertaking and we have worked hard in order to make the transition as smooth as possible. We are already seeing huge benefits from our joint venture, which is very encouraging.

These are extremely pleasing results and I would like to thank residents for adapting to these changes so quickly and supporting us in our efforts to increase our District’s recycling performance. The new service is proving more convenient for residents and more beneficial for the environment.

The increased uptake of our weekly food recycling service stands out in particular, and hopefully it goes to show how making individual adjustments to our recycling habits can add up and make a huge difference.

*Daventry Norse took over responsibility for waste and recycling collections, litter picking and street sweeping on public roads and paths, maintenance on roadsides and Council land of bushes, grounds and trees, maintaining play equipment, clearing fly-tipping and removing graffiti under a 10-year agreement worth £50 million with Daventry District Council last June.
